Two-Faced Woman
Released Dec. 31, 1941
Directed by George Cukor
Cast includes Greta Garbo, Melvyn Douglas, Constance Bennett, Roland Young, Ruth Gordon
Originally titled "The Twin Sister", this is the story of a woman who tries to win back her husband by posing as her own twin sister. MGM reasoned that if Ernst Lubitsch could turn Garbo into a successful comedienne, then why not turn her into a modern woman?
The film was a complete flop upon its release (one critic said it was like seeing your mother drunk) and many speculated as to whether or not it affected Garbo's decision to retire from the screen. Today, the film is seen as a fairly amusing comedy, not a bad film, just not up to the standards of Garbo's previous work.
