Love
Released Nov. 29, 1927
Directed by Edmund Goulding
Cast includes Greta Garbo, John Gilbert, George Fawcett, Emily Fitzroy, Brandon Hurst, Philippe de Lacy
Leo Tolstoy's Anna Karenina would be filmed twice with Garbo. This version re-teamed Gilbert and Garbo after their huge success with Flesh and the Devil. A later version would be made in 1935. This version took many liberties with the novel and it was filmed with two endings - theater owners could choose between the happy or sad version.
Absurd as it sounds, Love proved to be another winner. Gilbert and Garbo burned up the screen again although many critics found the scenes between Garbo and the young Philippe de Lacy (playing her son) more interesting and infused with an incestuous overtone.
MGM had no problem coming up with an advertising slogan - they simply wrote "Garbo and Gilbert in Love".
