Conquest
Released Nov. 7, 1937
Directed by Clarence Brown
Cast includes Greta Garbo, Charles Boyer, Reginald Owen, Alan Marshal, Leif Erikson, Dame Mae Whitty
Conquest cost MGM 3 million to make and was one of the most expensive productions up to that time. The studio was disappointed when it did not recoup its expenses. It is a lavish production with Boyer as Napoleon and Garbo as his mistress Countess Marie Walewska. Boyer clearly has the showier role and it is odd seeing Garbo play second fiddle. The film labors at a tedious pace and for once, even Garbo cannot ease the tedium.
Scene from Conquest
Next Film: Ninotchka
