Anna Karenina
with Frederic March
Released Aug. 30, 1935
Directed by Clarence Brown
Cast includes Greta Garbo, Frederic March, Freddie Bartholomew, Maureen O'Sullivan, May Robson, Basil Rathbone, Reginald Owen
Due to the meddlesome production code, the remake of Anna Karenina (Garbo had filmed the story earlier as a silent film under the title Love) almost did not happen. Production began under the scrutiny of the Joseph Breen office and there was to be no depiction of the passion between Anna and Vronsky. Garbo looked fabulous and her opening scene is a breathtaking one - she steps off a train behind a cloud of smoke and as the mist fades, we see her gaze in an incredible close-up. This version, unlike the previous Love, would have only one ending. Garbo won the New York Film Critics Award for her performance.
