Anna Christie
Released March 14, 1930
Directed by Clarence Brown
Cast includes Greta Garbo, Charles Bickford, Marie Dressler, George Marion
Garbo talks! That's what the movie slogans proclaimed and everyone was dying to hear what the mysterious Swedish Sphinx would sound like. Critics and audiences were not disappointed. It is 16 minutes before Garbo makes her entrance, slouching her way into a bar, plops down into a chair and in a deep, resonant, world-weary voice, demands "Give me a whiskey, ginger ale on the side, and don't be stingy baby!" Eugene O'Neill's play is very talky but good performances, especially from Garbo and Marie Dressler, keep it going. Garbo received her first Academy Award nomination for the film. A German version was filmed simultaneously.
Scene from Anna Christie - "Give me a whiskey..."
Scene from Anna Christie - "Put that in your pipe and smoke it..."
