The Torrent
Released Feb. 21, 1926
Directed by Monta Bell
Cast includes Greta Garbo, Ricardo Cortez, Gertrude Olmstead
Producers were not sure how to use Garbo after she arrived in Hollywood. In The Torrent, her first American film, she was cast as Leonara, a Spanish peasant girl who is sent to Paris and becomes an Opera singer. The film would not be her most memorable, but MGM executives and audiences were pleased with their new discovery. Variety claimed that "Garbo had everything, with looks, acting ability and personality." Louis B. Mayer's initial instinct about "those eyes" had paid off. The film was a success.
