Grand Hotel
Released April 12, 1932
Directed by Edmund Goulding
Cast includes Greta Garbo, John Barrymore, Joan Crawford, Wallace Beery, Lionel Barrymore, Jean Hersholt, Lewis Stone
Vicki Baum's popular novel is brought to the screen with an all-star cast that is irresistible. It is set in Berlin's Grand Hotel where a wide range of characters check in and out and where "nothing really happens". Garbo is almost upstaged by the young Joan Crawford (although they have no scenes together). This is the film where Garbo utters the famous line "I want to be alone". As the ballerina Grushinskaya, Garbo is melodramatic almost to the point of overacting. Grand Hotel won the Academy Award for Best Picture.
